A pair of Del Rio Little League softball teams is headed off to the next round of competition, but they’ll need the community’s help to offset the costs of competition.
The league’s 11-12-year-old and 13-14-year-old all-star softball teams are off to Abilene this weekend to compete in the Texas West State Little League Softball Tournament.
The league has created a GoFundMe to try and raise $5,000 for costs associated with competing in the tournament. That includes travel, room and board and meals for the two teams and coaches. As of this writing, $500 had been donated by nine donors. The GoFundMe can be found online at https://gofund.me/f38e35f8
Del Rio Little League President Pat Rodriguez also said that donations can be accepted through both PayPal and via Cash App. Persons can donate through PayPal using drll.president@gmail.com. They can donate through Cash App by sending funds to $delrioll .
While the tournament begins Friday, Rodriguez said donations can be made at anytime and any and all donations are accepted. He added that the league is a non-profit organizations and donations are tax deductible.
The 11-12-year-olds will compete in the Little League division and will open play Friday against Pecos at 8 p.m. The double elimination tournament also features Weslaco and Robinson, which will play each other Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The winners of Friday’s game will face each other Saturday at 8 p.m. The losers of Friday’s game will face off in an elimination game Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
Members of the Little League team include Keziah Bishop, Devyn Casillas, Klariza Cervantes, Amber Espinosa, Mayte Figueroa, Ayianna Garcia, Karina Gomez, Sofia Gomez, Karina Limon, Anaya Rodriguez, Janiah Ross, Lauren Sanchez and Alyna Villarreal. David Garcia is the team’s manager and coaches are Diana Armstrong and Mary Jane Ross.
The 13-14-year-old all-star team will compete in the Junior League division. They will open play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against West Brownsville. Lake Air and Floydada will play Friday at 8 p.m.
Friday’s winning teams will play Saturday at 8 p.m. while Friday’s losing teams will play Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in an elimination game.
Del Rio’s Junior League team features Amaddis Avila, Ava Casillas, Syann Casillas, Christi Colunga, Claritza Leija, Rebecca Mitchell, Andrea Montelongo, Roccia Moreno, Lynsey Rodriguez, Sierra Torres, Gisele Treviño and Christina Williams. Jose Montelongo is the team’s manager and coaches are Darin Casillas and Isabel Guajardo.
