A majority of the Del Rio City Council Tuesday voted to formally appoint John Sheedy as interim city manager.
The council considered the resolution appointing Sheedy during the main portion of the meeting, but decided to postpone voting on the measure until after further discussions in executive session.
After the closed-door session, Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano reconvened the meeting in open session and made the motion to set the salary for the interim city manager at $115,000 a year, with a $500-a-month gas stipend for travel and “to appoint Mr. John Sheedy, effective date, July 31.”
Councilman Steven Webb gave the second to the mayor’s motion.
When Lozano asked Webb if he had any further comments. Webb said he did not.
Lozano then moved to the rest of the council members, asking them for their comments.
Councilman J.P. Sanchez and Councilwoman Alexandra Falcon Calderon said they had no comments or questions.
Councilman Raul C. Ojeda said, “Just looking forward to the transitional change. It’s a big responsibility, so, Mr. Sheedy, thank you for stepping up to the plate.”
“No concerns,” said Mayor Pro-Tem Alfredo “Fred” Carranza Jr.
“And I have no additional concerns, so we’ll go ahead and take the vote,” Lozano told the council.
Five members of the council present then voted unanimously to approve Lozano’s motion to approve the resolution appointing Sheedy, with Falcon Calderon abstaining.
Lozano then turned to City Manager Matt Wojnowski and said, “I just want to thank you for your time served here in the city of Del Rio, Texas, and I applaud you on your next adventure and endeavors in the city of Hutto. I just wanted to thank you, since this is your last (council) meeting. I hope you enjoyed your time here, and I hope your family enjoys their time in Hutto, Texas.”
“With that being said, I also want to thank Mr. Sheedy for stepping up to the plate and being our interim city manager. I know your experience as emergency management coordinator, that you have expertise regarding emergency planning, and I look forward to working with you, along with the council, in moving forward and continuing continuity of government,” Lozano added.
