Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano started Tuesday’s Del Rio City Council meeting with a proclamation honoring women.
Lozano was joined by Miss Del Rio Teen Isabella Lucia Levrie in proclaiming July 2021 as “Queens Month” in Del Rio.
“I want to recognize that we have a lot of women here in the city of Del Rio who have accomplished a lot of great things,” Lozano said before reading the proclamation.
“National Women’s Month does take place in March, and unfortunately, because of COVID and everything that was going on then, we weren’t able to do a proclamation then, but we want to carry on that legacy in March 2022,” the mayor added.
He noted in August, the country celebrates Women’s Equality Day, in remembrance of the signing of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, which gave women the right to vote.
Lozano then read the proclamation:
“Whereas, Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually during the month of March in the United States since 1987; and whereas, a global celebration of the economic, political and social achievements of women took place for the first time on March 8, 1911, and many countries around the world celebrate the holiday with demonstrations, educational initiatives and customs such as presenting women with gifts and flowers;
“And whereas, the United Nations has sponsored International Women’s Day since 1975, when adopting its resolution on the observance of International Women’s Day, the United Nations General Assembly cited the following reasons: To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.
“Whereas, July 19 through 20th, 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott spearheaded the first women’s rights convention in American history. . . This marked the first public meeting calling for women’s right to vote; and whereas, July 4, 1876, suffragettes crashed the Centennial celebration in Independence Hall to present the vice president with a declaration of the rights of women, written by Matilda Joslyn Gage; and on July 14 through the 16th, 1917, women from the National Women’s Party were arrested while picketing the White House, demanding universal women’s suffrage, and they charged with obstructing traffic,” Lozano read.
The proclamation went on to highlight milestones in women’s history.
Lozano then read the remainder of the proclamation:
“Whereas in July we celebrate essential democratic anniversaries, the birth of the United States on July 4, 1776, and the birth of the women’s rights movement on July 19 and 20, 1848; now, therefore I, Bruno J. Lozano, mayor of the city of Del Rio, Texas, do hereby proclaim the month of July in Del Rio, Texas, as ‘Queens Month,’ and I call upon the citizens and visitors of the Queen City of Del Rio to recognize the month as a way to honor all the local women of our community, who we are making honorary queens this month for their service as role models, mentors to family and friends who make this community a better place to live.”
