Many in Val Verde County were concerned when their phones dinged with a Blue Alert at about 11:30 p.m. Monday night

Blue Alerts are issued by the state to warn people in Texas a law enforcement officer has been shot, wounded or killed in the line of duty and the suspect is on the run.

Tuesday night’s response was activated when Breanton Chitwood, a Clay County deputy, was shot during a traffic stop. Clay County is located about 400 miles away and Wichita Falls is located in the county.

Thankfully, the deputy was wearing a bullet proof vest and managed to return fire. He was released after a short stay in the hospital late Monday night.

Clay County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyde had a message for the gunman. “To the guy who did this today, you didn’t get my guy. You shot him in the vest. You didn’t get him. But we are going to get you. Bet that.”

Lyde described the gunman as, “white male, mid-20s, kinda thin, didn’t get a real good look because as soon as he got to the door frame he got shot in the chest.”
