SPORTS — Del Rio to host annual cross-country meet Saturday

It’s going to be a new home for the annual Del Rio Invitational Cross-Country Meet this year.

The meet, which has traditionally been held at the Del Rio Middle School campus, will be held Saturday morning at the fields behind Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. Eight teams from around the region including Eagle Pass High, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Uvalde, Crystal City, Brackettville, Comstock, Nueces Canyon and Rocksprings are scheduled to compete against host Del Rio’s runners.

The varsity boys and girls will race first, kicking things off at 8 a.m.

At 8:30 a.m., the small school varsity and junior varsity girls will compete.

The small school varsity and junior varsity boys will race beginning at 9 a.m.

The last race of the day is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and will be a combined middle school boys and girls race.

According to Del Rio head cross-country coach Vicky Perez, the races will start on the lower soccer fields and will end on the track near the starting line.

This is the second consecutive week that Del Rio competes in a meet. The team kicked off its season Aug. 14 at the Uvalde Cross-Country Invitational Meet.

Del Rio’s girls finished second to Medina Valley by seven points, 32-25.

The Queens’ Emily Torres did capture the girls’ individual title as she finished first in a time of 20:08.9. Teammate Kimberly Gloria was second in 20:48.6.

Joining them in the top 10 were teammates Sydney Ballard, who was eighth in 21:49.4, and Mackenzie Pulliam, who was ninth in 22:06.5.

Rounding out the top five runners for Del Rio was Nayeli Cordova, who was 12th in 22:33.7.

Skylar Urias finished 18th in 24:20.3.

Medina Valley also took first in the varsity boys division with 26 points. Del Rio was second with 42 points.

Ely Losoya took first overall as the Del Rio runner finished in a time of 16:50.6. Teammate Mikael Perez was second, less than 10 seconds behind Losoya in 16:59.7.

Juan Lopez finished 11th in 18:47.2, Joe Chavez was 13th in 19:18, and Arnulfo Ramirez was 17th in 19:34.2.

Del Rio was also second in the junior varsity girls race with 34 points. Medina Valley was first with 23 points.

The Queens’ Cassandra Martinez finished second by less than four seconds, crossing the finish line in 15:05.4. Teammate Grace Rodriguez was third in 15:31.5.

Payton Becker took eighth in 15:39.5, and Natalie Cordova was ninth in 15:44.

Rounding out the top five runners for Del Rio was Karen Palacios, who took 12th in 16:17.3.

Also competing for Del Rio were Marina Jimenez (13th, 16:18.7), Isela Gonzalez (17th, 17:07.9), Yanelly Paloa (18th, 17:19.8), Elie Zavala (20th, 17:45.4) and Gia Urias (21st, 17:53.7).

Medina Valley made it a clean sweep as they won the junior varsity boys race over Del Rio, 20 points to 42 points.

Del Rio did claim another individual title as Andres Rivera was first in 18:53.

Also finishing in the top 10 were Eric Flores, who was seventh in 20:18.8; and Jose Martinez, who was ninth in 20:51.6.

Rounding out Del Rio’s top five runners were Roy Dominguez, who was 13th in 21:41.6, and Aiden Dueñez, who was 15th in 21:58.4.

Also competing for Del Rio were Armando Garcia (16th, 22:10.1), Owen Southam (17th, 22:21.5) and Leonardo Rivera (18th, 22:23.0).
