Del Rio’s home volleyball debut showed that this could be the year the Queens end their playoff drought.
The team’s three-set sweep of Carrizo Springs was a one-sided affair. Del Rio (11-6) won 25-13, 25-12, 25-5, and the scores weren’t even that close.
The Queens haven’t reached the postseason since the 2017 season, but having already reached double digits in wins this season, that streak could come to an end.
Carrizo’s best showing was in the first set as they squeezed 13 points out of the Queens, but Del Rio showed why they’ve been off to such a hot start this season.
The Queens jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second set and that lead would grow to 21-12 late.
Part of that was due to the solid work of Queens like Kylie Ramirez, who delivered some big kills down the stretch, and the all-around hustle by Karolina Alderete and libero Angela Mijares.
In the third set, the Queens rolled to an early 13-1 lead as Carrizo Springs had no answer. Whether it was Bertha Faz or Yuridia Muñiz at the net providing a lengthy wall for the Wildcats to try and get around, or Iva Garabedian providing her own brand of hard-hitting deliveries, the Queens pummeled Carrizo into submission.
Carlamarina Fuentes provided the exclamation point, serving out the match and helping Del Rio grab its 11th win of the season.
Del Rio is scheduled to compete in the Ragin’ Rattler Tournament this weekend in San Marcos.
The Queens won’t play at home again until Saturday, Sept. 18, in a district match against Laredo United.
