County commissioners members Tuesday set the county property tax rate for the coming year, leaving the tax rate unchanged from this year’s rate.
Val Verde County Commissioners Court held its formal public hearing, required by state law, on the proposed tax rate at 9:15 a.m. during its regular term meeting.
County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. opened the hearing.
“Just for the general public, the tax rate is (comprised of) the maintenance and operation rate of .4393 and the debt service rate is .0728. Is there any discussion on the tax rate?” Owens said.
Moments later, the judge announced, “If there’s no discussion on the tax rate, I will close the hearing and re-open the meeting at 9:17,” Owens said.
Later in the meeting, the court took its record vote on the tax rate.
“I move to adopt a maintenance and operation rate of .4393 and a debt service rate of .0728. This rate will raise less taxes for maintenance and operation than last year’s tax rate, and the maintenance and operation (rate), on a $100,000 home, will be $439.30,” County Commissioner Pct. 3 Beau Nettleton said.
County Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores Jr. gave the second, and each member of the court, polled individually, voted in favor of the motion.
The court during its Tuesday meeting also unanimously voted to adopt the proposed 2021-2022 county budget.
