The start of school will be pushed back to Aug. 24 and the next three weeks after that will be online, according to a San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District release late Wednesday. This still has to be approved by the Board of Trustees Monday.
Also, there will be no sports or other University Interscholastic League competitions until Sept. 14, at the earliest.
The release in its entirety is below.
SFDRCISD Administration will be preparing to make a recommendation during Monday’s scheduled school board meeting to delay the start of classes for all students attending SFDRCISD schools for the 2020-2021 school year; and secondly, to extend and implement instruction to a model that is 100% online during the first 3 weeks of school. If this recommendation is approved, the first day of school will be moved to Monday, August 24th, and students will begin instruction at home, online for a 3-week period. Under this plan, unless otherwise directed by local or State executive orders, SFDRCISD schools will open to students who wish to attend in person no later than the week of September 14, 2020.
During the past month, District and campus leadership have worked tirelessly with parents to plan for students’ return; however, in light of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in our community and the recent decision by Governor Abbott to allow districts in Texas more flexibility, the Administration has decided to make a recommendation to delay offering instruction in order to ensure ample time for SFDRCISD’s technology department to provide devices (laptop, computer, tablet or iPad) and/or offer Wi-Fi connectivity to any student who may need it when school starts.
The District also made the decision last night to suspend all summer sports, band and any extra-curricular camps until further notice. In the interest of safety and out of an abundance of caution, SFDRCISD, like many other Districts will recommend the suspension of all UIL and extra-curricular activities until September 14, 2020. If UIL proceeds with currently sanctioned competitions beginning this August, our student athletes would not participate in those competitions.
SFDRCISD will continue to provide our parents and community with updates on our plans for reopening school in the coming weeks.
