Del Rio faced plenty of stiff competition as the Rams and Queens cross-country runners took part in the annual FEAST Patriot Cross-Country Invitational meet this weekend in San Antonio.
Several of the teams Del Rio saw will be present at the Class 6A, Region IV meet later this year, so competing at the FEAST meet was sort of a regional preview for many of the programs involved.
Del Rio did not have a runner in the Class 5A-6A 5,000 Meter Run finish among the top 10 overall.
As a team, Del Rio’s girls were 14th out of 28 teams. Austin Vandegrift was first followed by Round Rock and Comal Canyon.
Sophomore Emily Torres was the best finisher among Del Rio runners in the varsity division, as she took 15th in a time of 19:02.29.
As for her teammates, Sydney Ballard was 62nd in 20:58.49, Cassie Martinez was 98th in 22:01.79, Mackenzie Pulliam was 103rd in 22:10.79, Skylar Urias was 113th in 22:26.23, and Nayeli Cordova was 143rd in 23:28.28.
Del Rio’s boys finished 20th out 24 teams. Round Rock took first followed by Austin Vandegrift and San Antonio Central Catholic.
On the boys’ side, Mikael Perez was the top Rams runner, finishing 70th in 17:06.20. Teammate Joe Chavez was 126th in 18:23.72, Joseph Fuentes was 131st in 18:26.96, Juan Lopez was 135th in 18:28.80, and Jose Ramirez was 158th in 19:16.99.
The Del Rio High cross-country program is scheduled to have an open week this weekend. They are next scheduled to compete Sept. 17 and 18 at the Islander Invitational at Momentum Campus in Corpus Christi.
