If Del Rio isn’t a favorite to win a district title in tennis this fall it’s certainly not the fault of the Rams or the Queens.
With the District 30-6A schedule looming, the Del Rio team once again took care of business this weekend with a 16-3 win over the San Antonio Harlan Hawks.
The win upped Del Rio’s fall season record to 10-1 with only a 13-6 loss to San Angelo Central as the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record.
Included in those 10 wins was a 10-8 victory over district rivals, and Laredo tennis powerhouse, Laredo Alexander during the Silver Tournament in San Antonio.
Leading the way is last year’s girls singles district champion Andrea Favela. Only a sophomore, Favela is 9-0 on the season in girls singles. That included a 6-0, 6-3 win against San Angelo Central.
Fellow district champions, Reagan and Kennedy Treviño, who took the girls doubles title last season, have also had a strong season thus far, going 7-3.
Another leader on the squad is senior William Proffit. A multi-sport athlete, Proffit has ruled the courts, going 9-0 in boys singles after just missing out on a regional berth in 2020.
The win against Harlan was a total team effort for Del Rio. Even when the players found themselves down, they were able to rally to a win in multiple matches.
In boys singles, Max Camarena and Proffit kickstarted the team’s performance as they won in straight sets in their respective matches, 6-0, 6-1.
Jose “Pepe” Castañeda was equally as strong, winning 6-1, 6-0.
Roger Montemayor dropped the first set in his match, 2-6, but rallied to take the next two sets, 6-2, 10-6.
Aiden Darden won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Alexander Beattie was another Ram who had to battle back. After winning the first set 6-0, he dropped the second set, 3-6. In the decisive set, Beattie would not be denied, winning 10-5.
In girls singles, Favela was untouchable, winning 6-0, 6-0.
Marian Garcia was a straight set winner, 6-1, 6-4, as was Alejandra Solar, who took her match, 6-3, 6-3.
The Treviño twins were winners as well. Reagan won her match, 7-6(7-5), 6-4, and sister Kennedy won, 6-1, 6-1.
Dana Mijangos also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
In boys doubles, Castañeda and Camarena rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
The team of Proffit and Darden won a close match, 7-6(7-4), 6-4.
In girls doubles, the Queens took two of their three matches.
Favela and Garcia won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, and Solar and Mijangos won, 6-2, 6-1.
Del Rio will open district play Friday in Laredo when they take on the LBJ Wolves.
Del Rio’s junior varsity team will host Uvalde JV Thursday at the Lillie Castañeda Tennis Center at Del Rio High.
