With non-district play in their rearview mirrors, the Queens volleyball team is ready for the games that matter.

District play arrives this week for the Queens (12-9) and they enter play on a high note after beating Crystal City Friday in three sets – 25-10, 25-15, 25-20. The Queens had dropped their previous three matches before the win over the Lady Javelinas.

The Queens’ sub-varsity teams also earned wins against their Crystal City counterparts.

At the middle school level, both the seventh and eighth grade Queens teams won in tournaments they competed in over the weekend.

It had been a rough two weeks for Del Rio’s varsity team prior to Friday’s win.

The Queens fell to Antonian on Aug. 31 in three sets – 25-12, 25-8 and 25-12. They then traveled to Midland and lost to Midland Lee Legacy in three sets – 25-6, 25-11 and 25-20.

“The girls came out flat at the beginning and slowly began to get stronger. We couldn’t at the end, but they fought hard,” Queens assistant coach Nydia Fernandez said.

The third loss came at the hands of the McCollum Cowboys on Sept. 7. Once again, Del Rio fell in three sets – 25-21, 25-18 and 25-15.

Play in District 30-6A began Saturday with the schools from Laredo and Eagle Pass in action.

Defending district champions Laredo United began their title defense with a three-set win over Laredo United South. The Lady Longhorns won 25-10, 25-13, 25-20.

Laredo Alexander also won its district opener, stopping Laredo Nixon in three sets. The Lady Bulldogs won 25-22, 25-13, 25-14.

Eagle Pass also opened its district schedule with a win, stopping Laredo LBJ in three sets. The Lady Eagles won 25-21, 25-12, 25-23.

Del Rio will open its district schedule on the road as they travel to Laredo to face Laredo LBJ Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Queens will play its second home match of the season Saturday when they host Laredo United at 1 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.
