SPORTS — Queens volleyball drops district opener

Del Rio’s first district volleyball match went down to the wire, but the win wound up eluding the Queens.

The team traveled to Laredo to face the LBJ Wolves in the Queens’ opening match of play in District 30-6A this season. The two teams battled for five sets before LBJ finally stopped Del Rio to earn its first win of the season and hand the Queens their first district loss.

Del Rio lost 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 21-25, 18-20. The loss drops the Queens to 12-10 on the season.

With the win, LBJ improves to 1-1 in district play.

United sits atop the district standings at 2-0 after sweeping Eagle Pass, 25-12, 25-23, 25-13. Eagle Pass falls to 1-1 in district.

Laredo United South improved to 1-1 in district after beating Laredo Nixon in five sets. The Lady Panthers won 17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-15, 15-11. Nixon dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

Laredo Alexander, which won its first district match Saturday, had a bye Tuesday.

Del Rio hosts Laredo United Saturday at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium beginning at 1 p.m.
