Del Rio City Council members unanimously approved an ordinance declaring a disaster because of the ongoing immigration situation at the international bridge.

The council consulted with its attorney in a closed-door session during a special meeting Tuesday. The consultation was “to discuss and receive advice on the current status of the Del Rio International Bridge and surrounding city property.”

Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano declared a state of emergency in the city Saturday as thousands of migrants camped under the bridge after crossing the Rio Grande and entering Texas illegally.

After the council returned from executive session and announced no action had been taken, Lozano made a motion to approve Ordinance No. O:2021-095, which is titled, “An ordinance of the city council of the city of Del Rio declaring an emergency and disaster to assist with securing the international border in the city due to the ongoing immigration influx and associated issues in the city of Del Rio, Texas.”

Councilman Raul Ojeda gave the second.

Lonzano asked if there were any additional comments or concerns.

“Mayor, you’re doing an excellent job. Thank you, and you have all my support, anything you need,” Ojeda said.

Webb said, “You’re doing a great job. You’re taking care of the city. You’re trying to do everything possible. Safety first, and you’re covering all that. We’ve got everybody here to help, and you’re staying right on top of it. I couldn’t ask for better.”

Mayor Pro-tem Alfredo “Fred” Carranza Jr. said, “No questions, mayor, but I think you’re doing an excellent job. He’s been out there, as we know, all the time, juggling a bunch of very difficult situations, so thank you for that.”

“Rock and roll, mayor; rock and roll,” Councilman J.P. Sanchez said.

After a commentary by the mayor, the council voted unanimously to approve the ordinance.
