SPORTS — Del Rio cross-country wraps up predistrict schedule at Seguin

Del Rio’s pre-district cross-country schedule is in the books.

The Rams and Queens wrapped up their non-district race schedule Saturday morning in Seguin as they took part in the Seguin Matador Cross-Country Invitational.

In the Varsity 5K division, the Queens finished fifth while the Rams finished eighth.

Sophomore Emily Torres led the way for the Queens, taking seventh overall in a time of 19:21.51. Kennady Fontenot of New Braunfels was the top overall runner in the race, taking first in 18:23.66.

Junior Kimberly Gloria was 22nd in 20:28.56, senior Sydney Ballard was 58th in 22:02.78, junior Cassie Martinez was 66th in 22:21.57, junior Nayeli Cordova was 68th in 22:22.83, and junior Skylar Urias was 98th in 23:46.34.

Dripping Springs took the team title with 36 points. New Braunfels was second with 49 points, and San Antonio East Central was third with 113 points.

The Rams were led by sophomore Ely Losoya, who was seventh overall in 16:30.99. Eagle Pass’ Oscar Ruiz was first in 15:57.38.

Junior Joseph Fuentes was 63rd for Del Rio in a time of 18:15.80, junior Mikael Perez was 72nd in 18:24.37, junior Andres Rivera was 74th in 18:26.87, senior Joe Chavez was 88th in 18:46.72, junior Jose Ramirez was 108th in 19:07.37, and senior Juan Lopez was 113th in 19:13.87.

New Braunfels won the team title with 62 points. San Antonio FEAST was second with 90 points, and Dripping Springs was third with 94 points.

In the Junior Varsity Girls 5K, senior Grace Rodriguez was the top finisher for Del Rio as she took 28th in 24:23.72. Joining her was junior Marina Jimenez (36th, 25:01.72), junior Natalie Cordova (38th, 25:06.39), sophomore Payton Becker (42nd, 25:29.16), sophomore Luz Guerra (45th, 25:33.45), and sophomore Kaylie Morales (62nd, 26:36.97).

As a team, Del Rio finished fifth. Dripping Springs was first followed by San Marcos and New Braunfels.

In the Junior Varsity Boys 5K race, junior Aiden Dueñez was the top Del Rio runner as he took 22nd in 19:37.78. Max Blanchett of New Braunfels was first in 18:19.61.

Also competing for Del Rio was senior Roy Dominguez (24th, 19:40.82), junior Joshua Reyes (48th, 20:15.41), sophomore Armando Garcia (79th, 21:13.70), sophomore Eric Flores (87th, 21:29.13), and freshman Owen Southam (102nd, 21:56.59).

As a team, Del Rio finished seventh with 230 points. New Braunfels was first with 40 points, San Antonio Harlan was second with 40 points, and Dripping Springs was third with 52 points.

While Del Rio will have next weekend off, the program will host its Sixth Annual “We Run This Town” Color Run/Walk Saturday, Oct. 9, beginning at 8 a.m. at the corner of Chapman Road and Dodson Avenue. There will be a one-mile race and a 5K. Packet pick up and late registration begins at 7:15 a.m. The one-mile race begins at 8 a.m. while the 5K begins at 8:20 a.m. Registration fees are $20 for adults, $10 for kids, ages 6 to 12. Kids ages 5 and under can run for free. Participants are asked to wear protective eyewear and clothes they don’t mind getting stained with color.
