Del Rio banking legend Bill Cauthorn died Monday night. He was 83 years old.

Cauthorn went to work at the Del Rio National Bank in 1964 and moved across Main Street to The Bank & Trust three years later, where he remained in an emeritus position until his death.

Although Cauthorn’s health had declined over the past several years, making it nearly impossible for him to go to work, the bank’s staff honored him daily by keeping the lights on in his corner office, giving it the appearance he’d be there anytime.

Before he started in the banking business, Cauthorn played for legendary college football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant when he was leading Texas A&M. Although he lettered for the Aggies, Cauthorn would always correct people and joke, “I only practiced for Bear Bryant, didn’t get into many games.”

Although he’s a cornerstone of the local banking industry, one of his greatest contributions was founding the local food bank, Loaves and Fishes.

The 830 Times will release more information about his funeral as it becomes available.
