It was a historic day for Comstock High School Cross Country Friday morning at the UIL State Meet at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock.
The previous top finish for a Comstock team in the state cross country meet was 12th and this year’s Lady Panthers blazed a trail to a seventh place finish.
The top finisher for the Lady Panthers was Arleth Garcia who finished the two-mile course in 13 minutes and 36 seconds for a 17th place finish.
Right on her heels was Emila Mila who finished 20th in 13 minutes and 40 seconds.
Kennia Lopez finished the course in 13 minutes and 59 seconds for a 37th place finish.
Other finishers were:
46th Andrea Lopez 14 minutes, 17 seconds
54th Yaritza Pena 14 minutes, 30 seconds
72nd Isela Chavez 15 minutes, 55 seconds
96th Rebecca Mitchell 15 minutes, 32 seconds
“My girls exceeded every goal they set for themselves as a team this year,” said Lady Panthers coach Jaclyn Abbey. “They went out there with the mentality of keeping their teammates within sight during the race and making Comstock history and they did just that.”
Meanwhile, the boys didn’t finish quite as well but they are building a strong future, according to their coach.
“The boys gained valuable experience on their first trip to Round Rock and have built a strong future with 3 freshmen and 2 juniors aiming to return to Round Rock,” said Comstock Panthers Cross Country Coach Lee Abbey.
The top finisher for the boys was Junior Freddy Terrones who established a personal record with an 18 minute and 2 second finish for the 27th spot in the state.
