Del Rio cross country’s sophomore sensation finished her first State meet among the top 50 runners in Texas.
Emily Torres crossed the finish line 41st at the Class 6A Girls State Cross Country Meet Saturday at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock. Torres set a personal record with her performance, completing the course in 18:50.2.
The defending District 30-6A Girls Varsity champion, Torres was the sole Del Rio representative at the meet. Her appearance, though, marked the 17th consecutive year that Del Rio High School was represented at the meet. This was Torres’ first appearance at the meet.
Lewisville Flower Mound’s Natalie Cook won the State championship, crossing the finish line in 16:32.4. The senior’s time was more than a minute faster than runner-up Aubrey O’Connell of Prosper.
Cook’s performance also spurred Lewisville Flower Mound to the Class 6A State Girls team championship with 41 points. Three of the team’s runners finished in the top 10, and their top five runners all finished in the top 15.
