SPORTS — Swim team continues to show improvement

Del Rio High School swimmers recently traveled to the Northside Swim Center to compete against MacArthur, Brennan, LEE, Nixon, Martin, and Judson high school teams. The Rams placed fourth and the Queens placed fifth overall.

Scoring points for the Rams were senior Manuel Delgado-Gaona, who placed third in both the 50 and 100 free, hitting season bests in both events.

Senior Athan Zertuche placed eighth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free, swimming lifetime bests in both events.

Junior Isaac Ruiz placed ninth in the 200 IM, and eighth in the 500 freestyle, with a lifetime best.

Junior Mario Perez swam a lifetime best and placed seventh in the 100 back, and placed 20th in the 50 free with a lifetime best.

Freshman Leo Vaquera placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke with a lifetime best, and 11th in the 200 IM, his first time to swim this event.

Freshman Gabriel Gallegos placed eighth in the 200 free, and ninth in the 500 free, his first time to swim both events.

Freshman Owen Southam placed fifth in the Rookie 50 free, his first time to swim for the Rams.

Freshman Armindo Rayo placed 11th in the Rookie 50 free and 12th in the Rookie 100 free.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Ruiz, Gallegos, Delgado Gaona, and Perez placed sixth, cutting two seconds off their seed time.

The 200 free relay team of Zertuche, Vaquera, Southam, and Perez placed eighth, cutting 26 seconds off their seed time.

The 400 free relay team of Delgado Gaona, Vaquera, Gallegos, and Ruiz placed fifth.

Rams Swimmer of the Meet was Athan Zertuche.

Scoring points for the Queens were junior Nevaeh Martinez, with lifetime bests in the 50 and 100 free with a fifth place finish in the 100 and seventh in the 50.

Junior Chanceine Saechao placed fourth in the 100 breastroke and swam a lifetime best in the 100 free and placed 11th.

Junior Ana Rendon-Flores placed ninth in the 100 back, her first time to swim the event, and placed eighth in the Rookie 50 free with a lifetime best.

Junior Ana Perez placed 11th in both of her events, the Rookie 50 free and the Rookie 100 free.

Sophomore Aelynn Hyten placed 19th in the 50 free.

Sophomore Jackie Graham placed fifth in the 200 IM.

The 200 Medley Relay team of Hyten, Saechao, Martinez, and Graham placed seventh, cutting 13 seconds off their seed time.

The 200 free relay team of Saechao, Perez, Rendon, and Hyten placed 11th, cutting 14 seconds from their seed time.

The 400 free relay team of Martinez, Graham, Rendon-Flores, and Perez placed seventh.

The Queens Swimmer of the Week was Ana Rendon-Flores.

The team will return to NEISD’s Walker Natatorium Nov. 12 for an invitational meet.
