An undermanned Queens basketball team was no match for a full South San squad Tuesday night.
With only eight players suited out, the Del Rio squad couldn’t keep pace with the Bobcats, falling 74-32 in San Antonio. The loss dropped the Queens to 6-8 on the season.
Del Rio fell behind 26-6 after the first quarter after Sydney Ballard and Sierra Horton were the only Queens to score in the opening stanza. That deficit grew to 22 points by halftime as Del Rio trailed, 41-19.
The 13 points in the second quarter was the only time Del Rio broke double digits in scoring in any quarter. The Queens were held to just 13 points in the second half.
Joselyn Gonzalez finished with 10 points to lead the Queens in scoring. Makayla Lewis had seven points, Ballard finished with five points, Horton and Allie Rodriguez each had four points, and Sharleen Perez had two points.
Del Rio traveled to Navarro Thursday to begin play in a tournament there.
In their opening game, the Queens took on Gregory-Portland and lost, 54-52, dropping them to 6-9 on the season.
“We played them hard to the last second,” Queens head coach Marisa Soto said.
The Queens held a two–point lead at halftime, 23-21, before Gregory-Portland came alive in the second half, outscoring Del Rio 35-27, to take the game by two.
Ballard led Del Rio with 15 points including a pair of 3’s. Gonzalez was close behind with 14 points and two 3-pointers of her own.
Nelly Robles had seven points, Alexia Muñiz had six points, Rodriguez had four points, and Lewis and Horton each had two points.
The Queens were scheduled to play Lockhart this evening at 6 p.m.
