Raffle tickets were bought in droves for a chance at 125 guns at the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce’s Wild Game Dinner and Gun Raffle Saturday night.
The event, held annually on the first Saturday of December, supports a number of efforts for the Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s menu featured fried venison, pulled pork, venison sausage, potato salad and several other sides.
“We were thrilled by our raffle ticket sales,” said Blanca Larson, Del Rio Chamber of Commerce executive director.
Jimmy Murdoch, who’s been involved with the event since its birth 32 years ago, said the raffle tickets sales pleased him as well.
“We have consistently offered 125 guns in the raffle for a number of years now, and now, thanks to technology, we are seeing ticket sales from throughout Texas,” said Murdoch. “I think we are being positioned as one of the top Wild Game Dinner and gun raffles in the state.”
The event is a huge effort by the community, as the 25-person Special Projects Committee leads the way, but there are a lot of volunteers that reinforce their efforts.
From the high school, 61 students from the welding class volunteer from 6 a.m. until the event wraps up and another 20 from the Air Force Junior ROTC are supporting efforts throughout the day, and a number of volunteers reinforce efforts at night, including the Boy Scouts and Del Rio High School’s culinary arts class.
“This really helps us a lot but there is no way we could do it without the community’s support,” said Larson. “From the volunteers to the sponsors to the many who come out and support the event by buying dinner and raffle tickets. This is a great example of our community coming together.“
