The Del Rio Police Department has identified the person whose body was found on East Ogden Street Sunday night.
Police were notified Sunday around 6:19 p.m., via 911, about a person who had fallen from the Dr. Fermin Calderon Boulevard/US Highway 277 overpass onto the street below.
According to a release Monday from the City of Del Rio, the body was that of Jesus Rivas Romero, 64. The release also stated that Romero was a citizen of Venezuela.
“Del Rio Police Department Public Information Officer Gonzalez explains that next of kin has been notified for Rivas Romero. This investigation remains open pending autopsy results,” the release added.
According to the city’s release, police found Rivas Romero lying face down near the 1100 block of East Ogden Street.
“The male suffered severe head trauma and had no signs of life,” the release stated.
According to the release, witnesses in the area reported seeing Rivas Romero jump from the bridge. On the 830 Times’ initial story regarding the incident, which was linked to the Times’ official Facebook page, one person who posted under the name Alexia Gordon expressed her sorrow at being unable to come to the aid of the man before he leapt.
“(Crying emoji) to the man that jumped. I’m sorry I didn’t get to save u (sic). I tried to stop but there was to (sic) many car (sic) in back of me,” Gordon posted. Later in the thread she said she spoke to Del Rio police about what she had witnessed.
The city’s full release is as follows:
“On December 5, 2021, at 1819 hours, Del Rio Police Department officers responded to a 911 call for service at the area of the South Bedell Avenue overpass in reference to a subject that had fallen from the bridge.
“Upon officers’ arrival, a male adult was located lying face down below the overpass bridge near the 1100 block of East Ogden Street. The male suffered severe head trauma and had no signs of life.
“Witnesses in the area reported the male subject was seen as he jumped off the US Hwy 277 South / Dr. Fermin Calderon Boulevard overpass.
“Emergency Medical Services were requested to the scene. Del Rio Police Department Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene for further investigation.
“The male was identified as Jesus Rivas Romero 64-year-old, citizen of Venezuela. Del Rio Police Department Public Information Officer Gonzalez explains that next of kin has been notified for Rivas Romero. This investigation remains open pending autopsy results.”
