The 830 Times
Three hundred and sixty two third, fourth and fifth grade Del Rio students squared off Saturday in music memory, dictionary skills, spelling and oral reading during the University Interscholastic League competition.
The writing and number sense competitions were held earlier but winners were announced Saturday.
Six students in each category were recognized for top honors, but according to the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District superintendent, all the students benefited from the competition because of the culture it creates.
“The Elementary UIL Academic Meet promotes a strong culture around academic success. It makes achieving at high levels lots of fun,” said Dr. Carlos Rios, SFDRCISD superintendent.
Each school received points for how their students finished and the top three schools were recognized with
Buena Vista Elementary taking top honors, followed by Roberto “Bobby” Barrera Elementary finishing second and host school Garfield Elementary took third.
