SPORTS — Del Rio sports icon and trailblazer Sid Blanks dies

Former professional football player and Del Rio sports icon Sidney “Sid” Blanks passed away at his home in Webster, Texas Sunday.

He was 81 years old.

Blanks, a graduate of the San Felipe High School Class of 1960, went on to play collegiality at Texas A&I University, now Texas A&M Kingsville, before going onto a professional football career with the Houston Oilers and the Boston Patriots.

In 2015, Del Rio’s Sidney Blanks Park, located off Gillis Avenue between West De La Rosa and Bridge streets, was dedicated in his honor.
