While a vague threat of school violence made on a popular social media site has been deemed “not credible” by a variety of law enforcement agencies, school districts around the nation handled the threats with a varying degree of caution.
Locally, the San Felipe Del Rio CISD continued with its final day before the winter break uninterrupted, but the district issued a release saying administrators were aware of the threat and the district is monitoring social media activity on and off campus.
The district’s release in full reads as follows:
“A threat to schools circulating on TikToc (sic) with the purpose of undermining the last school day before the holiday has caused confusion and panic among parents nationwide. While the video pertaining to school violence has spread around the entire state and country, it is important to note that San Felipe Del Rio CISD campuses have NOT been specifically mentioned.
“Our SFDRCISD Police department and campus administrators are aware of the video, and are being extremely vigilant, closely monitoring all student interactions and social media activity both on and off campus.
“We hope students will enjoy their last day of the school year and we hope you and your family have a restful holiday season.
“Together, We Are Better!”
The SFDRCISD school district is scheduled to begin its winter break Monday, Dec. 20. Classes should resume Tuesday, Jan. 4.
According to CNN, multiple school districts, including some in Texas, canceled classes on Friday out of caution due to the threat.
“The US Department of Homeland Security said Friday morning it has no evidence to suggest the claims are credible, but encouraged the public to ‘remain alert,’” the article from CNN added.
