‘Tis the season for giving, and the Del Rio Rams football team has been doing plenty of that throughout this school year.
Thursday was the latest example as members of the program stood outside Bel Furniture for several hours as they collected, sorted and distributed clothing to families in need this holiday season.
According to head football coach Roderick Taylor, between $3,000 and $4,000 worth of clothing was collected. A total of 42 families were assisted during the clothing drive, and the rest was donated to the Bethel Center to help others.
“Some of the stuff we collected was brand new. They still had the tags on them,” Taylor said. “We just want to thank Bel Furniture for allowing us to use their parking lot for this effort.”
Since Taylor’s return to Del Rio three years ago, the idea of community service has always been one of the key tenets of the program. That has meant the players and coaches have given up some of their weekends to help wherever they can.
In November, members of the team assisted with the Feed the Line event at the Val Verde County Fairgrounds that provided Thanksgiving meals to first responders in the area. They were also a part of the volunteer team at the initial Feed the Line event in September that provided meals and drinks to first responders and National Guardsmen in Del Rio as part of the effort to support Customs and Border Protection and its efforts to protect the US/Mexico border.
Last year the team helped with the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office in its toy drive, and they spent time with residents and staff at Val Verde Nursing Home, visiting and helping with games like bingo.
