Del Rio fought to the end, but Midland was too much for the Queens to handle.
Three second half goals propelled Midland High to a 4-2 win over the Del Rio Queens soccer team Tuesday night at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
It was the first official match of the 2021-22 season, and Del Rio head coach Wilber Rivas is confident the Queens will only get better as the season progresses.
“Our freshmen are doing pretty good and our seniors are fighting,” Rivas said. “Midland has a good squad with some good strikers, but we never gave up even when we were down late in the second half.”
Midland took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Queens were able to tie the match before halftime on a goal by Noelia Ibarra.
In the second half, Midland was able to take advantage of a couple of Del Rio mistakes to take a 4-1 lead.
“We made a lot of mistakes in the back,” Rivas said. “We were not able to stop their penetrations, and our one-on-one play was terrible.”
Alondra Sanchez scored in the final minute of play to cut the lead to 4-2, but that was as close as the Queens would get.
Del Rio is scheduled to compete in the Steele/Clemens tournament beginning Thursday. Rivas said that due to San Felipe Del Rio CISD COVID protocols the team won’t be able to spend the night and will have to travel and return home at the end of play each day.
“We’ll see how it goes, but we’ll make it work,” Rivas said.
Del Rio’s next home match will be Tuesday, Jan. 11, when the Queens host Laredo Martin at 6 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
