First the Rams basketball game was postponed. Now, it’s the Queens’.
Thursday afternoon the San Felipe Del Rio CISD announced via its official Facebook page that Friday’s scheduled home game between the Del Rio Queens and Laredo Alexander Lady Bulldogs had been rescheduled to Wednesday, Jan. 19. The game times will be 5 p.m. for freshmen and sub-varsity teams and 6:30 p.m. for varsity.
While the notice published by the school district did not include a reason, it stems from an outbreak of COVID at Alexander High School which was discovered Monday.
“We’re following our district protocols, which is a 10-day, stay-at-home period for anyone who is positive,” Laredo United ISD Athletic Director Bobby Cruz told the Laredo Morning Times for a story Wednesday. “The cases are spiking. It’s a fluid situation, but as of now it’s not changing.”
The positive cases had already caused Friday’s game in Laredo between the Del Rio Rams and Laredo Alexander Bulldogs to be rescheduled to Monday, Jan. 17.
The rise in the number of positive cases in Laredo is affecting other schools within the United ISD. Laredo United and Laredo LBJ’s boys teams also rescheduled their game from Tuesday to Wednesday as United’s programs were hit by positive cases.
This is the second consecutive season that COVID has forced teams in District 30-6A to postpone and reschedule games. Last season, Del Rio played only a handful of district basketball games before having to cancel their boys and girls’ seasons after being unable to make-up enough games to try and qualify for the postseason.
