Del Rio High senior Jadyn Casillas made sure the Queens’ district soccer schedule started with a bang.
Casillas, who earlier this week signed a letter of intent to play soccer for Schreiner University in Kerrville, scored five goals in a 5-1 win over Laredo LBJ in the District 30-6A opener for Del Rio Saturday.
Casillas’ first goal came off an assist from Cassandra Ochoa. Goal number two was scored off a penalty kick. The third goal was a put-back by Casillas off a shot by teammate Giselle Castañeda.
On the fourth goal, Casillas anticipated the LBJ’s goalie punt, corralled it and then scored.
Casillas’ final goal came as Ochoa’s initial run and shot on goal was blocked, but Casillas swooped in to score off the rebound.
Queens head soccer coach Wilber Rivas praised the work of his team in the win, especially his midfielders.
“It was a good game for us. It was a little physical at times. We tried to generate a rhythm, but we got disrupted by fouls. We were able to control the tempo, but we did miss a few opportunities on goals,” Rivas said. “It was a great job overall by each third. Defensively, we did a good job not allowing any major attacks. Our midfield did a good job controlling the ball and our final third did a good job finishing.”
In other 30-6A girls soccer matches this weekend, Laredo United blasted Eagle Pass, 9-0; and Laredo Nixon edged United South, 1-0. Laredo Alexander did not play this weekend.
Del Rio is scheduled to host Laredo United Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
