While the Del Rio Queens basketball team didn’t reach the postseason, the team’s new head coach would rather focus on the positives than the negatives.
The Queens closed out their season Tuesday with a 55-32 win over the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles. That win upped Del Rio’s season record to 15-19 and 3-9 in district.
“The kids played really well,” Queens head coach Marisa Soto said. “We did a lot of good things to end our season!”
It was an up and down season for Del Rio marked by a second straight season of postponed games due to COVID protocols. However, this season Del Rio’s basketball teams were able to play a full slate of district games.
Del Rio asserted its dominance in the first quarter, jumping out to a 17-4 lead. Six different Queens players scored in the first quarter as Soto kept her players fresh throughout the game with a rotating lineup.
The lead climbed to 25-11 by halftime.
Del Rio then really opened the game up in the third quarter, scoring 19 points and carrying a 44-26 lead into the fourth quarter before finishing things off with 11 points in the final stanza.
Sydney Ballard led the Queens with 10 points. Joselyn Gonzalez and Nelly Robles each had nine points. Makayla Lewis had seven points. Karolina Alderete had six points. Allie Rodriguez had four points. Alexia Muñiz and Sierra Horton each had three points, and Araceli Hernandez and Sharleen Perez each had two points.
Ballard, Hernandez and Perez concluded their Queens basketball careers with the win over Eagle Pass, as all three are seniors.
