Much like their male counterparts, the Del Rio Queens golf team is going to have climb out of quite the hole if they hope to win this weekend’s Brown Auto golf tournament.

Del Rio opens today’s final round in third place behind Uvalde and Eagle Pass.

Of the Queens’ four golfers, only one shot below 100 on the first day of competition Friday at the San Felipe Springs Golf Course.

Senior Leanna Galindo shot a 95 to lead the Queens on day one. Fellow senior Lorena Torres was second with a 102. Joining them were juniors Adali Hernandez, who shot a 108, and Joelda Alcaraz, who shot a 110.

Del Rio’s team score of 415 leaves them 34 shots behind the team from Uvalde.

While three members of the Lobos shot 99 or above, it was Sofie White that carried the team to the top spot on day one. White shot a 4-over 76 to lead not just Uvalde, but all individual golfers competing this weekend.

Joining White on Uvalde’s team are Payton Dodson (99), Emilee Garcia (102) and Morgan Dreyer (104). The quartet finished Friday with a team score of 381.

Eagle Pass shot a 393 in an attempt to defend their Brown Automotive Del Rio High School Girls Invitational Golf Tournament team title.

Valeria De La Cabada shot a 94 to lead the Lady Eagles. Regina De La Cabada was close behind with a 95. Deidra Kuri and Maria Gutierrez each shot 102 to round out the team score. Ana Flores also shot 111 for Eagle Pass, but only the four lowest scores comprise the total team score.

Laredo United South is fourth with a 421. South does have the current number two golfer in the tournament as Lesly Rodriguez shot an 89 on the first day.

South San is fifth with a 431. They were led by Alyssa Contreras’ 99.

Laredo Alexander is sixth with a 440. Zaida Gonzalez led the Lady Bulldogs with a 106.

Laredo United is seventh with a 467. Mariana Luna’s 106 was the lowest score for the Lady Longhorns Friday.

Eagle Pass C.C. Winn is eighth with a 477. Becky Baltazar is leading the team with a 110.

As for the top five golfers after day one, Uvalde’s White is first with her 76. South’s Rodriguez is second with an 89 followed by Eagle Pass’ Valeria De La Cabada, who shot a 94. There’s a three-way tie for fourth as Eagle Pass’ Regina De La Cabada, United South’s Aniea Cantu and Del Rio’s Galindo each shot 95.

The tournament concludes this afternoon.
