NEWS — Democratic Party voters cast early ballots

Val Verde County’s Democratic Party voters are heading to the Del Rio Civic Center to cast early ballots in their primary election.

The Democratic Party Primary Election is March 1.

Sample ballots for Democratic Party voters in each of the county’s four commissioner precincts are available for review and download on the web site of the Val Verde County Clerk.

Democratic Party voters in Val Verde County will pick their nominee for United States Representative, District 23, selecting either Priscilla Golden or John Lira. The winner of the nomination will face the Republican Party nominee in the November General Election.

There are five candidates for the party’s nomination for Texas Governor. They are Inocencio (Inno) Barrientez, Beto O’Rourke, Joy Diaz, Rich Wakeland and Michael Cooper. The winner of the nomination will face the Republican Party nominee in November.

The incumbent Roland Gutierrez is unopposed for the party’s nomination for State Senator, District 19, and the incumbent Eddie Morales is unopposed for the party’s nomination for State Representative, District 74.

There are a variety of other state offices on the ballot, some of them contested, some of them not.

There are several local offices on the Democratic Party Primary Election ballot.

Eight positions on the Democratic Party ballot are uncontested.

Val Verde County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. is unopposed as he seeks his party’s nomination for the position he currently holds. Owens will face the Republican Party nominee in the November General Election.

County Court-At-Law Judge Sergio J. Gonzalez is unopposed for the nomination for the position he currently holds. Gonzalez is the likely nominee for the seat, and he is unopposed for the position in the general election in November.

District Clerk Jo Ann Cervantes is seeking the nomination for re-election to the position she currently holds. Cervantes is unopposed in the primary, but will face a Republican challenger in November.

County Clerk Generosa “Janie” Ramon is seeking the nomination for re-election to the position she currently holds. Ramon is unopposed in the primary, but will face a Republican challenger in November.

County Treasurer Aaron D. Rodriguez is seeking the nomination for re-election to the position he currently holds. He is unopposed in the primary and in the general election.

Also unopposed in the primary and the general election is County Surveyor Abner Martinez, who is also seeking re-election to the position he currently holds.

Justice of the Peace Pct. 2 Antonio “Tony” Faz III is seeking his party’s nomination for the seat he currently holds. Faz is unopposed in the primary and has no challenger among the Republicans in November.

Justice of the Peace Pct. 4 Hilda Castillo Lopez is seeking her party’s nomination for the seat she currently holds. Lopez is unopposed in the primary and has no challenger among the Republicans in November.

The three contested races in the Democratic Party Primary Election are for County Commissioner Pct. 2, County Commissioner Pct. 4 and Justice of the Peace Pct. 1.

The incumbent Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 Jesse James Treviño is seeking the nomination for re-election to the seat he currently holds. Former Del Rio police officer Ramon Ray Hernandez is the challenger.

The race for the Justice of the Peace Pct. 1 seat will likely be decided in the primary, since no Republican filed for the seat, meaning the Democratic Party nominee will likely be unopposed in the November general election.

County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez is seeking his party’s nomination for re-election to the seat he currently holds. He faces Rose Marie Coronado Castro, a greeter at Val Verde Regional Medical Center, for the Democratic Party nomination. The winner of this race will face the Republican nominee for the seat in November.

County Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores is seeking his party’s nomination for re-election to the seat he currently holds. He faces two challengers for the nomination: Del Rio City Councilman Alfredo “Fred” Carranza Jr. and former county precinct foreman Juan Dehoyos. 

The race for the County Commissioner Pct. 4 seat will likely be decided in the primary, since no Republican filed for the seat, meaning the Democratic Party nominee will likely be unopposed in the November general election.
