The 830 Times
Del Rio’s boys track team kicked off its 2022 season with a dominant win on its own home turf.
The Rams varsity and junior varsity teams finished first in the team divisions at the Queen City Relays held Feb. 18 inside and around Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
The meet was the first of the year for Del Rio’s athletes, but some of the teams that were invited had already competed in meets the weekend prior. Joining Del Rio at the relays were Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Uvalde and Laredo United South.

100 METERS
Freshman Zane Hughes made quite the impact at his Queen City Relays debut, edging teammate Jovahn West for first place in the 100 meters. Hughes crossed the finish line in 11.44 seconds and West was close behind in 11.47 seconds. Teammate Nathan Adame was fifth in 12.12 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Sammy Flores took first in a time of 12.41 seconds. Roel Barrera was second in 12.57 seconds, and Edgar Reyes was fifth in 12.64 seconds.
200 METERS
Sophomore Zack Taylor showed off the speed that helped make him a regional qualifier last year as he won the 200 meters varsity race in 22.85 seconds. Juan “Chili” Peralta was second in 23.49 seconds, and Adame was fifth in 24.50 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Flores made it 2-for-2 in his races as he was first in 24.92 seconds. Barrera was third in 25.47 seconds, Tristen Sutton was fifth in 25.62 seconds, and Juelz Neal was sixth in 25.62 seconds.
400 METERS
Senior Nathan Reyes, who was also a regional qualifier last season, took first in the 400 meters in 52.05 seconds. He was one of four Rams to finish in the top six. Joining him were Luis Pablo Galaviz, who was third in 54.87; Alex Rodriguez, who was fourth in 56.36; and Miguel Gonzalez, who was fifth in 56.91 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Sutton posted another top six finish, as he was second in 58.19 seconds. Gerardo Hernandez was third in 58.26, Brad Berumen was fourth in 58.52, and Owen Southam was sixth in 59.04 seconds.
800 METERS
Two Rams finished among the top six in the 800 meters. Mikael Perez was second in 2:04.52, and Joseph Fuentes was sixth in 2:10.84.
In the junior varsity division, Andres Rivera took first in 2:16.20. Joshua Reyes was fourth in 2:22.46.
1600 METERS
Perez also competed in the 1,600 meters, taking fourth in 4:47.
In the junior varsity division, Andres Rivera took first in 5:21.41 while Jose Ramirez was second in 5:22.13.
3200 METERS
Jonathon Mendoza was Del Rio’s varsity team’s top runner, finishing sixth in 11:27.11.
In the junior varsity division, Ramirez took first in 11:20.94.
110-METER HURDLES
Perry Mcintire finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in 18.12 seconds. Teammate Virgilio De Hoyos was close behind in fourth place in 18.27 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Hugo Rosales finished second in 21.09 seconds, and Logan Sutton was fourth in 22.68 seconds.
300-METER HURDLES
De Hoyos stepped up in the 300-meter hurdles, taking second in 45.34 seconds. Mcintire was third in 45.63 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Logan Sutton was second in 49.18 seconds, and Rosales was fourth in 50.88 seconds.
400-METER RELAYS
The team of Adame, West, Peralta and Hughes was first in the 400-meter relays in a time of 43.79 seconds.
In the junior varsity division, Del Rio also took first in 46.18 seconds thanks to Jose Ortiz, Aaron Acosta, Andrew Villareal, Emmanuel Devonte Reyes and Juelz Neal.
800-METER RELAYS
Del Rio also took first in the 800-meter relays as Hughes, West, Peralta, Taylor and Gonzalez teamed up to finish in 1:30.44.
It was another first for Del Rio in the junior varsity division as Ortiz, Acosta, Villareal, Reyes and Neal finished in 1:38.05.
1600-METER RELAYS
Del Rio swept the relay races with a first place finish in the 1,600-meters. Nathan Reyes, Taylor, Rodriguez, Peralta, Galaviz and Gonzalez were part of the team that finished in 3:36.79.
It was also another first place in the junior varsity division as Acosta, Villarreal, Rolando Rios, Ortiz, Logan Sutton and Berumen helped cross the finish line in 3:45.87.
LONG JUMP
West showed off his athleticism by taking first in the long jump after a leap of 20 feet, 9 inches. Galaviz took sixth in the event with a distance of 18 feet, 10 inches.
In the junior varsity division, Emmanuel Devonte Reyes was second at 18 feet, 4 inches, and Villareal was fourth at 17 feet, 1.5 inches.
TRIPLE JUMP
Alissandro Sanchez was Del Rio’s top finisher in the triple jump, taking fifth after a jump of 36 feet, 5 inches in the varsity competition.
In the junior varsity division, John Chaney was second at 32 feet, 11 inches.
POLE VAULT
In the varsity pole vault competition, Devin Barrera was second after clearing a height of 12 feet. McIntire was third after clearing 11 feet, 6 inches.
In the junior varsity division, Steven McBlain took first after clearing 9 feet, 6 inches in fewer tries than teammate Israel Levrie, who was second but who also cleared 9 feet, 6 inches.
DISCUS
Diego Piña captured first place in the discus with a throw of 150 feet, 7 inches. He edged teammate Noe Rodriguez, who took second with a throw of 150 feet.
In the junior varsity division, Robert Valadez took first with a throw of 109 feet. Oscar Duran was second at 104 feet, 7 inches. Julio Gamez took fourth at 100 feet, 9 inches, and Robert A. Valdez II was fifth at 100 feet, 4 inches.
SHOT PUT
Piña pulled off the double first place finishes as he won the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, 4.5 inches. Manuel Padilla was third at 40 feet, 4.5 inches, and Rodriguez was fourth at 39 feet, 10.5 inches.
In the junior varsity division, Juan Ramos took first with a toss of 38 feet, 5 inches. Valadez was second with a toss of 36 feet, 2 inches, and Duran was fourth at 35 feet, 3 inches.
