Del Rio closed out the first half district play in girls soccer in the best way possible for the team – a thrashing of Eagle Pass on a night meant to honor the team’s seniors and their parents.
The Queens scored early and often, handing the Lady Eagles a 16-0 loss, to finish the first half of district competition undefeated. In six matches, Del Rio has outscored its opponents 42-2. The Queens have not surrendered a goal in four consecutive matches and last allowed a goal Feb. 8 against Laredo United.
Del Rio has 18 points to sit atop the district standings with three points awarded for each win and one point allowed for a draw. Teams can earn another point by winning a shootout following the regulation draw.
Laredo Nixon is second with 16 points (5 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss), followed by United’s 14 points (3 wins, 3 draws, 1 loss) and Laredo Alexander’s nine points (3 wins, 4 losses).
All six of Del Rio’s seniors registered at least one goal. Leading the way was Jadyn Casillas who scored four goals. Cassandra Ochoa scored three goals, and Marintia Cortez, Kayla Celedon, Yasmine Cardenas and Zoey Ortiz each scored one for Del Rio’s seniors.
Sophomore Andrea Sauceda scored a pair of goals, freshman Monika Gonzalez, junior Laurie Ignacio, and freshman Kaylee Hernandez each scored one goal.
Cortez had a pair of assists, and Celedon, Casillas, Gonzalez and Hernandez each had one assist, as the win was a true team effort.
Del Rio had an open date over the weekend. The Queens will resume play on Tuesday, March 1, when they host the Laredo LBJ Lady Wolves at 6:30 p.m. at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium.
