Del Rio has one more tune-up left before the start of district play in baseball, but action has already begun around 30-6A.

The Rams went 1-4 at the recent Mira’s High School Baseball Classic in Corpus Christi with the sole win being a 15-4 thumping of Corpus Christi Miller.

Monday, Del Rio played just its second game of the season at home when they hosted the San Antonio Cornerstone Christian Warriors.

The Warriors took the contest, 6-1.

The game was scoreless until the third inning when Cornerstone plated three runs aided by a two-run double by Hayden Stringfellow.

The Warriors added to their lead in the fourth with two more runs – one scoring on a passed ball and one scoring on a wild pitch.

Cornerstone’s final run came in the sixth inning as Ivan Hoyt scored on a single off the bat of Gehryt Kaarlsen.

Del Rio managed just three hits in the game.

The first came in the third when Caden George hit a sharp line drive to centerfield.

The next was an infield single off the bat of Wade Cooper.

The final hit came in the bottom of the seventh inning as Will Cooper, Wade’s older brother, smacked a single to bring home Daniel Crispin, who’d earlier walked, with the Rams’ only run of the game.

Jon Barragan took the loss for the Rams despite striking out six in four innings of play. He gave up five runs on six hits and four walks.

Matt Mendez reached base twice on walks. Del Rio had five walks as a team.

The Rams are scheduled to travel to Laredo this weekend for the Laredo ISD Tournament.

Del Rio opens district play Tuesday, March 15, as they’re scheduled to host the Laredo LBJ Wolves at The Bank & Trust Ram Field at 7 p.m.

Laredo Alexander and Laredo Nixon squared off Tuesday night in the first district game for both teams. Alexander won the game, 5-1.
