One of the three candidates for the Del Rio City Council At-Large, Place C, seat has withdrawn from the race, City Secretary Mari Acosta announced Friday afternoon.

Del Rio native Diego Martin Almaraz filed a certificate of withdrawal from the May 7 general election with Acosta Friday.

Acosta announced the withdrawal and forwarded a copy of the certificate to The 830 Times.

Almaraz confirmed his withdrawal Saturday morning.

“I have withdrawn from the race due to work-related commitments. Del Rio deserves a councilperson that will dedicate 100 percent of their time to its citizens and unfortunately at this time, I cannot. I thank everyone that encouraged and showed tremendous support leading up to my decision to run; it truly means a lot,” Almaraz told The 830 Times in a text message today.

Almaraz was one of three Del Rioans who filed an application for a place on the May 7 ballot for the At-Large, Place C, seat, which is being vacated by Councilman Raul C. Ojeda, who did not file for re-election.

The two candidates remaining in the race are two former city councilwomen: Elizabeth “Liz” Elizalde and Ernestina “Tina” Martinez.

Almaraz’s certificate of withdrawal reads, “I, Diego Martin Almaraz, a candidate for the office of City of Del Rio At-Large, Place C, Council Seat, hereby withdraw my candidacy from the May 7, 2022, General Election. The election is being conducted by the City of Del Rio and is to be held on May 7, 2022.”

Almaraz then signed the certificate of withdrawal, and the document was signed as acknowledged by Acosta.
