Del Rio, Texas – On March 23, 2022 at 11:40 p.m., Del Rio Police Department officers responded to Val Verde Regional Medical Center (VVRMC) located at 801 N Bedell Avenue for an assault call. Upon arrival the officer learned the assault occurred at Val Verde Nursing and Rehabilitation Center located at 100 Hermann Drive.
The caller reported her family member, a resident of the center, identified as Maria Merscham, was assaulted by another resident. Merscham was transported to VVRMC by Emergency Medical Services. The caller reported Merscham had a lump on the back of her head.
A senior officer then arrived on scene and assisted by photographing Merscham. Criminal Investigation Division Detectives responded to the hospital and took over the investigation. Merscham was later transported to University Hospital for further medical treatment.
On March 25th, 2022 Maria Merscham passed away. The Del Rio Police Department has notified the next of kin. An autopsy was ordered and is pending results. This investigation remains open, and no further information is available at the time. The City of Del Rio extends our sincerest condolences to the friends and family of Maria Merscham during this most difficult time.
