Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano proclaimed April 2022 as “Month of the Military Child.”

Lozano made the proclamation during the April 12 meeting of the Del Rio City Council. He was joined by Melissa Menchaca, flight chief for the children and youth program at Laughlin Air Force Base, and by Janette Gomez, school liaison program manager.

“Whereas, April marks the Month of the Military Child, when our nation pays tribute to the resilience and tenacity of military children; and whereas, over two million active duty National Guard, Reserve and children of veterans, who did not make the choice to serve but live each day supporting their brave parents, live out the words of the poet John Milton: ‘They also serve who only stand and wait’; and

“Whereas, the Child and Youth Program at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas, has collaborated with the city of Del Rio mayor’s office to bring attention to this important event to the citizens of Del Rio; and whereas, the Month of the Military Child recognizes military connected youth as heroes during this month-long celebration; and

“Whereas, the local community is invited to help celebrate these young heroes by taking part in Purple Up! Day by wearing or displaying purple in recognition of military children; and whereas, the city of Del Rio recognizes that April is nationally recognized as Month of the Military Child, and with the chosen color of purple because it symbolizes a combination of Army green, Air Force blue, Coast Guard blue, Marine red and Navy blue;

“Now, therefore, I, Bruno J. Lozano, mayor of the city of Del Rio, Texas, do hereby proclaim April 2022 as ‘Month of the Military Child,’ and I call upon the citizens and visitors to the city of Del Rio to participate in the showing of recognition of this important occasion in some form, either through a display or by wearing the color purple on Wednesday, April 20, 2022.”
