Del Rio High’s spring sports had their moment to shine Tuesday when the top student-athletes in baseball, softball, athletic training and track and field were recognized.
Joining them was the official announcement of the school’s male and female athletes of the year.
At the conclusion of the awards, the high school’s top male and female athlete of the year were named. Student-athletes nominated included Nathan Reyes and Jadyn Casillas, but this year’s Female Athlete of the Year was senior Sydney Ballard and the Male Athlete of the Year was senior Will Proffit.
Baseball did not hand out its awards. Head coach Nick Mendez recognized the junior varsity and varsity players but informed the audience that the team’s individual awards would be presented at the team’s banquet on Thursday.
Queens track and field presented its awards first. Head coach Jesus Limon did the honors.
Makayli Manriquez was named Junior Varsity Athlete of the Year.
Danielle Almanza was Thrower of the Year.
Ariana Erickson was Sprinter of the Year.
Kim Gloria was Distance Runner of the Year and was also named the Female Track Athlete of the Year.
CarlaMarina Fuentes was named Most Improved.
Sydney Ballard was named Jumper of the Year.
The Briana Muraira Sportsmanship and Dedication Award went to Myla Tabora.
Rams track and field was next up with head coach Richard Torres presenting the awards.
Zane Hughes was named Sprinter of the Year. He was also the Freshman Track Athlete of the Year.
Zack Taylor was named Relay Sprinter of the Year.
Mikael Perez was named Distance Runner of the Year.
Devin Barrera was named Jumper of the Year.
Diego Piña and Noe Rodriguez shared the title of Thrower of the Year.
Rolando Rios was the Junior Varsity Track Athlete of the Year.
Nathan Adame took home the award for Most Improved.
The Briana Muraira Sportsmanship and Dedication Award went to Jovahn West and Juan Peralta.
The Male Track Athlete of the Year was presented to Nathan Reyes.
The Male and Female Academic Excellence Award went to Ashley Prather and Virgilio DeHoyos.
Queens softball head coach Arnulfo “Nufie” Rodriguez presented his team’s awards next.
The Miss. 400 awards, for players whose batting average was .400 or higher during the season, went to Hope Martinez, Ithalia Ozuna, Naylea Santana and Miamor Salazar.
Santana was also named Offensive MVP.
Jada Bishop and Rebekah Alcaraz were named co-Defensive MVPs.
Jena Villarreal was named the recipient of the Gilbert Martinez Queen of Hearts Award.
Martinez and Ozuna were also named co-MVPs.
Head athletic trainer Brad “Doc” Dixon oversaw the presentation of awards to the school’s student trainers.
Newcomer of the Year went to Camila Cervera.
The Heart & Soul Award was presented to Tanya Gonzalez.
The Senior GPA Award went to Jesse Arreola with a 5.625 grade point average.
The Junior GPA Award went to Caroline Vasquez with a 5.000 grade point average.
The Sophomore GPA Award went to Bryana Castro with a 4.113 grade point average.
The Freshman GP Award went to Valeria Reyes.
Academic All-State Awards were also presented to Emma Escamilla, Tanya Gonzalez, Jesus Arreola and Hannah Martinez.
Vasquez was also named Trainer of the Year.
