Local voters went with a familiar face in the race for Texas Attorney General, and helped bring an end to a Texas political dynasty for the time being.
Val Verde County voters overwhelmingly voted in favor of incumbent Ken Paxton over challenger George P. Bush in Tuesday’s Val Verde County Primary Runoff Elections.
Paxton, who garnered 387 votes to Bush’s 175 votes, drew more votes in absentee voting, early voting and election day voting while Bush never threatened in any of those three categories.
All vote totals are unofficial until they are canvassed.
Statewide, Paxton dominated Bush, winning more than 67 percent of the vote. Bush, who served as Texas Land Commissioner for seven years and who is the grandson of former president George H.W. Bush and the nephew of former president George W. Bush, was never able to overtake Paxton despite focusing on Paxton’s legal issues that include being under indictment the past seven years for securities fraud and facing an FBI investigation for abuse of office.
Paxton will now face Rochelle Mercedes Garza, who won the Democratic runoff, in the November elections. Garza drew most of Val Verde County’s votes in her race, 330-159, over challenger Joe Jaworski. Statewide, Garza earned more than 62 percent of the vote.
A total of eight races were voted on in the primary runoff elections in Val Verde County. The unofficial results are as follows:
