Jr. High art teacher’s work included in Brooklyn Art Library

A Del Rio 7th Grade art teacher is going to have a sketchbook of her art traveling the nation.

Sheri Vela recently completed The Sketchbook Project, sponsored by the Brooklyn Art Library and her work will tour the country for six months.

“I thought this was such a cool and unique way to show your artwork. Think about it, how many people can say they have their sketchbook at the Brooklyn Art Library!?” Vela asked.

Vela received a 5×7” blank custom sketchbook and it had a unique six-digit barcode so it could easily be catalogued into Brooklyn Art Library’s system.

I filled it with artwork about myself, my hometown, life experiences and current events,” she said.

Vela said it also sent a great message to her students. “It allowed me to show my students that as an artist and a teacher: we could get involved in a unique opportunity to put ourselves out there. To leave our mark in this world,” she said.

It gives her a unique perspective of her place in the world, thanks to art. “It’s just a piece of me floating around the USA,” Vela said.
