It’s been more than 100 days since Del Rio received more than half an inch of rain in a 24-hour period, but that long dry spell ended Monday when rains from a tropical low soaked the city.
According to climate data published by the National Weather Service, Del Rio received a total of .86 of an inch of rain between midnight Sunday and 5:30 p.m. Monday. Some areas of the city likely received more or less rain as the moisture-laden bands of the tropical low streamed over southern Val Verde County.
The low, designated Invest 98L by the National Hurricane Center, formed in the western Gulf of Mexico and began making its way west-northwest into Texas over the weekend.
The rain began falling in Val Verde County after midnight Sunday, and the National Weather Service reported that just over a quarter of an inch fell on the area between midnight Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday.
City Manager John Sheedy told the 830 Times at 5 p.m. Monday there had been “no major problems” in the city due to the day of rain.
“No problems, just really glad to see the rain again,” Sheedy said.
Despite Monday’s good soak, the area still has a long way to go to make up its annual rainfall deficit.
According to the National Weather Service, Del Rio has only had a total of 3.83 inches of rain since Jan. 1, including the rain received Monday. The NWS reports Del Rio’s “normal value” for this time of the year is 11.85 inches, so a deficit of just over eight inches of rain remains.
