Put another one in the win column for the Queens volleyball team.
Del Rio won its sixth straight match Tuesday, defeating Eagle Pass C.C. Winn in four sets in front of the home crowd at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium. The win puts the Queens at 13-6 on the season.
The Queens won the first set, 25-22, then took a 2-0 lead with a 25-18 win in the second set. Winn was able to take the third set, 25-22, before the Queens closed out a tough fourth set, 25-23, to win the match.
Karolina Alderete led the Queens with 16 kills while Kylie Ramirez (11 kills) and Yuridia Muñiz (10 kills) provided a strong presence at the net as well.
Alderete and Ramirez also each had two blocks to support Jazira Cuenca and her team-high three blocks.
Queens head coach Angelica Rivera said blocking has been a part of the game the team is still working to improve. She said one-on-one the Queens have been strong, but she said she’d like to see the team improve on its team blocking.
Syann Casillas had another strong match, leading the team with 31 assists and 15 digs. Angela Mijares also added 10 digs.
The Queens are scheduled to travel to Cotulla Saturday for a noon match there. Next week Queens fans will get a pair of chances to watch their ladies in blue do their thing at home as Del Rio has a pair of matches scheduled.
Del Rio will host Midland High Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., and then will welcome Midland Legacy, formerly Midland Lee, Friday at 5:30 p.m. Sub-varsity teams will play at 4:30 p.m. each day.
The matches against the teams from Midland will be Del Rio’s final non-district tune-ups before the Queens begin district play Saturday, Sept. 24 at Laredo LBJ at 1 p.m.
