One of Del Rio’s top young golfers has his first high school medal.
Isaac Diaz, a perennial top three finisher at tournaments across the state and country, took third place as a member of the Del Rio Rams varsity golf team as they competed at a tournament in McAllen.
Diaz, a freshman, shot a 73 on day one and a 75 on day two to finish the tournament with a 148.
Also competing for the Rams were Mark Peña, who shot a 99 and an 89 for a 188, Andrew Klink, who shot a 99, 98 for a 197; Austin Plumb, who shot 99, 102 for a 201; and Julian Fernandez, who shot 108, 116 for a 224.
As a team, the Rams shot 370 on the first day and 364 on the second day for a two-day total of 734.
Diaz is one of two golfing brothers. His younger brother, Isaiah, attends San Felipe Memorial Middle School. He, too, has seen success on the golf course and has won tournaments in his own age division.
Earlier this year Isaac won the STPGA Junior Golf Junior Tour event at the Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville. An eighth grader at the time, it was the first tournament in which he played against high school-aged golfers. He shot even par and won the event by four strokes.
