SPORTS — Del Rio Middle School cross-country wraps up season

Del Rio Middle School’s cross-country season was, in a word, perfect.

The school’s eighth grade boys team finished the season with first place finishes in every meet they attended. That included the final two meets at Comstock and Bandera.

Only three schools were represented at the Comstock meet with Del Rio sweeping team honors on the boys’ side.

Both seventh and eighth grade runners competed alongside each other, but Del Rio’s eighth grade duo of Alexander Perez and Julian Dominguez finished 1-2 overall. Perez took first in 11:35.8 while Dominguez was second in 11:42.6.

Seventh grade’s Leo Cavazos and Jacob Saucedo finished third and fourth. Cavazos was third in 12:07.2 and Saucedo was fourth in 12:09.0.

Del Rio’s runners took eight of the top 10 places overall in Comstock. Aside from the top four spaces, Del Rio’s runners were also sixth and finished eighth through 10th.

Abraham Cardenas, an eighth grade, was sixth in 12:19.1. Rounding out the top 10 were Julyus Calderon (8th grade, 8th place, 12:26), Ethan Jurado (7th grade, 9th place, 12:34.1) and Jesus Robles (7th grade, 10th place, 12:46.9).

Eighth graders who also ran in Comstock were Trent Serwatka (11th, 13:00.1), Reynaldo De Los Santos (12th, 13:08.7), Zachary Palazuelos (13th, 13:09.2), Armando Villanueva (17th, 13:51.9), Abraham Garcia (19th, 13:55.6), Jose Gallegos (23rd, 14:23.7) and Antonio Scott (27th, 14:44.6).

Seventh graders who also ran in Comstock were Ray Torres (16th, 13:42.6), Alexavier Medina (18th, 13:55.2), Carlos Jaquez (24th, 14:25), Eduardo Estrada (25th, 14:38.8), Adalberto Mendoza (26th, 14:38.8), Landon Leyva (28th, 14:50), David Neylon (29th, 15:06.1), Eli Tavera (31st, 15:57.9), Aaron DeLuna (34th, 16:22), Alan Huerta (36th, 16:46.8), and Juan Yanez (38th, 17:03.5).

On the girls’ side, Del Rio Middle School’s eighth grade girls ran away with the top three spots. Del Rio runners took eight of the top 10 spots in the race.

Finishing 1-2-3 were Devyn Casillas, Reba Salinas and Camila Fernandez. Casillas was first in 14:40.5, Salinas was second in 14:44.3, and Fernandez was third in 15:12.5.

The eighth grade team also placed Gabriela Diaz (5th, 15:32.6) and Camila De Los Santos (7th, 15:35.2) in the top 10.

Also competing for the eighth grade team was Karyme Valencia (17th, 16:13.2), Aniah Gonzales (20th, 16:54), Anahi Gonzales (27th, 19:09.2), Daniela Garcia (28th, 19:17.4), Ava Darden (33rd, 21:13.4) and Camila Berain (34th, 21:43.5).

The seventh grade team’s top finisher was Celesta Garcia, who was fourth in 15:32.4. Anna Curtis was sixth in 15:33.5, and Karissa Martinez was eighth in 15:39.4.

Also competing for the seventh grade team were Isabella Valdez (11th, 15:45.1), Nelly Zavala (12th, 16:01.9), Regan Becker (13th, 16:08.6), Hazel Altman (14th, 16:09.1), Ava Jimenez (15th, 16:09.6), Eva Medrano (16th, 16:11.5), Desiree Perez (18th, 16:42.5), Hailey Dobbins (22nd, 16:57.1), and Scotlin Grant (32nd, 20:26.8).

 

BANDERA

 

At the Bandera Middle School District Championships, Del Rio Middle School took first place in three of four divisions. The seventh grade girls team finished second in its division.

The eighth grade boys team flexed its dominance one last time, finishing first through fourth. Dominguez was first in 11:17.28 and he was followed by Alexander Perez (11:40.56), Daniel Perez (12:07.32) and Cardenas (12:10.49).

Joining them in the top were fellow Del Rio runners Serwatka (6th, 12:12.36), Calderon (7th, 12:18.60), and Palazuelos (8th, 12:24.14).

Also running for Del Rio were De Los Santos (11th, 12:38.58), Villanueva (16th, 13:03.81), Manuel Buitron (19th, 13:25.46), Scott (26th, 14:05.39), and Gallegos (27th, 14:16.90).

In the seventh grade boys race, Del Rio’s Cavazos and Saucedo were the top two Rams in the race, finishing 1-2. They were two of six Rams to finish in the top 10.

Cavazos was first in 11:29.21 while Saucedo was second in 11:30.10. Jurado was fifth in 12:12.55, Robles was sixth in 12:16.52, Medina was eighth in 12:46.02, and Torres was ninth in 12:52.8.

Also competing for Del Rio were Liam Gresham (12th, 13:08.20), Jaquez (13th, 13:12.64), Mendoza (15th, 13:23.81), Estrada (16th, 13:30.52), Leyva (19th, 13:43.26), Neylon (23rd, 14:38.67), Yanez (26th, 15:00.60), Eli Tavera (28th, 15:11.60), and Huerta (29th, 15:14.17).

In the seventh grade girls race, Celeste Garcia was Del Rio’s top finisher, taking third place overall in 13:38.34. She and Karissa Martinez were the only Del Rio runners to finish in the top 10 as Martinez was sixth in 13:49.76.

Also running for Del Rio were Natalia Bosko (14th, 14:10.02), Altman (17th, 14:29.66), Valdez (19th, 14:35.74), Becker (20th, 14:36.11), Nelly Zavala (21st, 14:38.15), Jimenez (22nd, 14:38.91), Medrano (23rd, 14:43.66), Curtis (24th, 14:53.66), Desiree Perez (32nd, 15:38.46), Dobbins (33rd, 15:48.66), Grant (37th, 16:50.82), and Hadassah Elliott (41st, 17:21.97).

The eighth grade girls race was more to Del Rio’s liking as half of the top runners called Del Rio home.

Reba Salinas was the top Del Rio runner, placing second in 13:17.60. Her teammates finished seventh through 10th. Casillas (7th, 14:27.90) Fernandez (8th, 14:46.68), Valencia (9th, 15:14.26) and Diaz (10th, 15:23.62) took spots 7 through 10.

Also running for the eighth grade girls team were Darden (12th, 15:44.44), Aniah Gonzales (14th, 16:13.02), Kaitlyn Guardiola (17th, 17:08.71), Garcia (18th, 17:18.68), Anahi Gonzales (19th, 17:41.58), and Camila Berain (27th, 20:34.24).
