SPORTS — Comstock Panthers, Lady Panthers compete in Regionals

From staff reports

The Comstock Panthers and Lady Panthers are headed for the regional cross country meet Tuesday, where they will battle for a spot in the State meet.

They qualified for Regionals Oct. 12 when they hosted district runners. The Panthers took four of the top five spots as they won the meet and the Lady Panthers took second

“Varsity boys ran hard to repeat as district champions in a more dominant manner than last season,” said Panthers cross country coach Lee Abbey.

Senior Freddy Terrones led the way as the district individual champion and was followed by fellow Panthers Sebastian Talamantez in second place and Edgar Crane in third.

Other Comstock runners were Jordan Allen in fifth; Creed Hardin in 14th; Hector Medina in 19th and Jaiden Sanchez finished 20th.

The Panthers are ranked as the eighth best Class A team in Texas.

The Panthers have certainly lived up to the ranking, as they placed third at Christoval, second at Sonora, won the Comstock Invitational, Spring Creek Invitational and the recent district meet.

Meanwhile, it took a Top 10 team to knock off the Lady Panthers as seventh-ranked Imperial Buena Vista runners outran the Lady Panthers.

Kennia Lopez was the top finishing Lady Panther, bringing home a fifth place finish, followed by Yari Pena in seventh, Isela Chavez in 14th, Baleigh Tinney in 18th, Angelina Briones in 25th and Christina Clements finished 26th to nab district runner-up honors.

Both varsity girls and boys have qualified for the regional meet Tuesday at Angelo State University where the Panthers will defend their regional championship from 2021.

“The Panthers and Lady Panthers will go all out to return to the next level to the state cross country meet in Round Rock!” said Abbey. “Both girls and boys junior high teams did a great job representing Comstock athletics as well!”

Keeping the Comstock winning going, the junior high boys team won its third district championship in a row, ensuring a deep talent pool for years to come.
