Val Verde County Commissioners Court members on Tuesday honored outgoing County Clerk Generosa “Janie” Ramon’s 16 years of service with a plaque presentation during their December regular term meeting.

Ramon lost her bid for re-election to the county clerk position in the November General Election and will retire at the end of the year. Ramon lost her re-election bid to Republican Teresa Esther Chapoy by less than 150 votes in the General Election in November.

County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. began the ceremony by reading the text inscribed on a glass plaque to be presented to Ramon.

“I’d like to present Ms. Ramon with this plaque for our sincere appreciation. It reads, ‘Congratulations on your retirement,’ and is presented to Generosa Ramon in sincere appreciation for your 16 years of outstanding commitment and dedicated service as county clerk for Val Verde County from Jan. 1, 2007, to Dec. 31, 2022,” Owens said.

The plaque was inscribed with the names of the judge and all four commissioners.

Owens then invited Ramon and members of her staff who attended the meeting to take a photo while he and the commissioners presented the plaque.

Afterwards, Ramon went to the podium to address the court.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your undying support, and I mean that literally. You’ve always been there to support the things that I’ve wanted to do in my office, and when you felt it wasn’t possible, you let me know, but that’s just part of working together,” Ramon told the court.

“I really appreciate all the times that you’ve done it. I’ve been through five (county) judges, and at least two or three different commissioners, and it’s about working together and getting things done, and, like I always tell the judge, staying in your own lane. You need to know where you fit in to county government, and it’s very different from city government, the school district, anything else. It’s totally different.

“So, again, thank you very much. If there’s ever anything I can do for the court or for the county in the future, please count on me. I’m not going anywhere. I’m just retiring. Thank you all very much,” Ramon said.

She was treated to a round of applause as she moved from the podium back to her seat at the front of the courtroom.
