The search for a new head football coach for the Del Rio Rams may be coming to an end soon.
San Felipe Del Rio CISD Athletic Director Frenchey McCrea Jr., said Tuesday that the process was nearing its finality after a nearly two-month search.
“We have conducted interviews and are in the process of submitting a name to the school board for approval. An official announcement will be made after board approval,” McCrea said Tuesday afternoon.
The San Felipe Del Rio CISD’s Board of Trustees typically has its regular meeting the third Monday of each month. January’s third Monday would fall on Jan. 16, but no agenda or notice has been posted on the district’s website as of Thursday morning.
The head coaching position has been vacant since former head coach Roderick “Rod” Taylor was reassigned from the position Nov. 14, 2022. First Assistant head coach Martin Sandate was named the interim head coach.
Taylor has since left the San Felipe Del Rio CISD and has accepted a special education teaching position and assistant football coaching position at Yoakum High School. The Yoakum Bulldogs play in District 12-3A, Division I and are coming off a season in which they went 4-7 and lost in the Bi-District round of the playoffs to Cameron Yoe, 39-28.
Taylor served as the Rams head coach from January 2019 to November 2022. He guided the Rams to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons, but did not advance past bi-district in any of those years. He posted a 12-29 record in his three seasons as Rams head coach.
Previously Taylor had served as the Rams offensive coordinator under former head coach McCrea. The duo helped lead the Rams to the third round of the playoffs in 2015 before Del Rio bowed out to Cibolo Steele.
