County Commissioner Pct. 2 Juan Carlos Vazquez has announced he is working with the local public school district to create a sports complex adjacent to the Del Rio Middle School.
Vazquez spoke briefly about the planned facility during the Feb. 28 meeting of Val Verde County Commissioners Court.
First, County Judge Lewis G. Owens Jr. read the heading of the agenda item: “Discussion and possible action on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Val Verde County and the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District for a park and a sports facility located at 720 E. De La Rosa St., (Del Rio Middle School).”
After Owens read the heading, Vazquez told the court, “This is an MOU that we received from the school district. I sat down with (Assistant County Attorney) Mr. John (Clemmer), and we’re tweaking that MOU a little bit on some changes that Mr. John
thought were needed, so we’re going back and forth, and I just wanted to keep the people updated on what’s going on with this project.”
“Do you want to go ahead and get approval for the county to sign pending the counsel’s review?” Owens asked.
“Yes, sir,” Vazquez replied, then made a motion to approve the memorandum, with County Commissioner Pct. 4 Gustavo “Gus” Flores giving the second. The court voted unanimously to approve the motion.
After the motion, Flores said, “I’d like to congratulate Commissioner Vazquez. This is a great project, and it shows unity between the school district and the county, and it’s going to benefit the community. Congratulations, Commissioner Vazquez.”
“I agree,” Owens said.
An artist’s rendition of the park and sports facility handed to the members of the court shows a variety of fields for soccer, football, baseball and softball, as well as several playground areas and pavilions.
Vazquez told the 830 Times today he is still finalizing plans for the facility with the school district and will present a final plan and agreement with the district during a county commissioners court meeting in the near future.
