Rain, sleet or snow, St. Patrick’s Day will still be celebrated in Del Rio, thanks to the Del Rio Parks Foundation and City of Del Rio staff.
Saturday’s event was slated for the Amistad Urban Oasis, right in front of the Del Rio Civic Center. However, when the weatherman let them know that lots of rain was coming, they moved it indoors.
Carin Cruz, president of the Del Rio Parks Foundation, said the vendors and custodians helped a lot to get everything together and move everything inside.
“We were able to have a free event for the community on a cold rainy day, and that way people could come here and bring their families and have fun,” Cruz said.
Alyssa Rodriguez, the event coordinator for the Del Rio Parks Foundation, said moving all the outdoor activities and games inside was easy and helped create a clean environment from the mud.
The St. Patrick’s Day Celebration is part of Del Rio’s “Staycation” promotion. Esmeralda Meza, community service director for the City of Del Rio said their staycation events are created to give something fun for people to do who did not go out of town for Spring Break or other holidays during the year.
One of the main activities during the Saturday event was the cornhole tournament. She said the first-place winners of the tournament won $100 while second-place winners received $50.
Local businesses also set up booths inside while food trucks sold fresh meals outside the front doors.
“We do have a lot of local businesses and food trucks set up here, and this community event gives them the chance to sell their products,” Meza said.
Daniela Cuellar sold spicy candy and rim dips at her booth called D’s Pikositos. She said it was a good idea to move the event inside so there would be a bigger turnout.
The event was co hosted by the City of Del Rio and the Del Rio Parks Foundation.
