It was a tough way for the Rams to end their baseball season.
Del Rio was held to just three hits in a 5-0 shutout against the rival Eagle Pass High Eagles Friday, bringing an end to a season that saw the Rams drop their final six games of the season, all district matchups.
Eagle Pass took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning thanks to an RBI single by Derek Ruiz and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Kaleb Salinas that scored Ruiz.
The lead grew to 4-0 in the top of the third after Aiden Lopez’s RBI single and a bases loaded double play that allowed Lopez to score from third.
The Eagles’ final run came in the top of the fifth. Lopez doubled, one of his three hits in the game, and scored on a double by Izhar Mauricio.
Del Rio’s offense could never get on track.
The Rams’ first hit came in the bottom of the third as Ricky Martinez blooped a single to right field.
After two more hitless inning, the Rams got back-to-back infield singles from Martinez and Tommy Gambrel. Neither player would get past second base.
Del Rio’s best chance to score came in the bottom of the second. Tyler George reached on an error and Aiden Natividad was awarded first after catcher interference. A balk moved both players into scoring position with no one out, but Eagle Pass hurler Hector Buentello retired the next three batters to keep Del Rio scoreless.
The loss was the final high school game for 10 Rams seniors including Ricky Martinez, Gambrel, Natividad, Mario Soto, Joe Guerrero, Angel Martinez, Jacob Bejarano, Albert Venegas, Ricky Avalos and Dom Molina. Those players, and their families, were honored in a ceremony following the contest.
